F4 Aircraft
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a tandem two-seat, twin-engined, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor fighter/fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy by McDonnell Aircraft. It first entered service in 1960 with the U.S. Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, and by the mid-1960s had became a major part of their respective air wings.
The Phantom is a large fighter with a top speed of over Mach 2. It can carry over 18,000 pounds (8,400 kg) of weapons on nine external hardpoints, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, and various bombs. The F-4, like other interceptors of its time, was designed without an internal cannon, but later models incorporated a M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. Beginning in 1959, it set 15 world records, including an absolute speed record, and an absolute altitude record.
The Phantom II served with VF-92 in the F-4B variant (1964 - 1968) and the F-4J variant (1968 - 1975). Unlike misinformation spread by hobbyists on the internet, they never transitioned to the F-14 Tomcat.
The VF-92 "Silver Kings" made eight war cruises in Vietnam (more than any other Navy squadron, together with VF-96) and flew combat missions from the U.S.S. Ranger, Enterprise, America and Constellation. The wartime tally for VF-92 included 868 days on the line: a MiG-21 shot down; the loss of 5 F-4Bs and 2 F-4Js in combat; the loss of 4 F-4Bs and 2 F-4Js in operational accidents.
An F-4J (BuNo. 157269), flown by Lt Curt "Dozo" Dosé (Pilot) and LCDR Jim "Routeslip" McDevitt (RIO), downed on 10 May 1972 a MiG-21MF Fishbed-J (flown by a Russion PVO colonel) with an AIM-9D Sidewinder. Using the callsign "Silverkite 211", they were on a Target CAP mission over Kep Airfield, near Hanoi. Lt Dosé spotted two MiGs on the runway, with two more on the taxiway. After a post turn, he engaged the already airborne MiGs for the kill.
